THE DEFINITION AND TYPES OF SENTENCE


A. DEFINITION OF SENTENCE
          A sentence is group of word and have a meaning. A sentence can include words grouped meaningfully to express a statement, question, exclamation, request, command or suggestion.
In simple terms, a sentence is a set of words that contain:
1. a subject (what the sentence is about, the topic of the sentence), and
2. a predicate (what is said about the subject)
          A sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop (AmE period) or a question mark or an exclamation mark (AmE exclamation point).


B. TYPES OF SENTENCE
1. Declarative sentence
          A declarative sentence states some information, the facts or an opinion and lets the reader know something specific.
Example:
- The teacher is a beautiful woman.
- Diana is a student 

2.  Interrogative sentence
          Interrogative sentence is a type of sentence that asks a question.
Example:
- What kind of food do you like?
- Where do you live?

3. Imperative sentence 
          Imperative sentence is used to issue a command or instruction, make a request, or offer advice.
Example:
- Wait for a minute!
- Read your book at home!

4. Exclamative sentence
            Exclamative sentence is used to express strong feelings, strong emphasis or emotion. 
Example:
- What a lovely eyes!
- How lucky she is!

5. Simple sentence
          A simple sentence consists of one independent clause. (An independent clause contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete thought.)
Example:
- Bill likes cake.
- I like this food

6. Compound sentence
          A compound sentenceis two (or more) independent clauses joined by a conjunction or semi-colon. Each of these clauses could form a sentence alone.
Example:
- She likes KFC but I like MCD
- Tina went to school and Derry went to work

7. Complex sentence
          Complex sentence consists of an independent clause plus a dependent clause. (A dependent clause starts with a subordinating conjunction or a relative pronoun, and contains a subject and verb, but does not express a complete thought.)
Example:
- We will missed our plane if we were late.
- He left in a hurry after he got a phone call.

8. Compound-Complex sentence
           Compound-Complex sentence consists of at least two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
Example:
- Kevin didn't come because he was ill so Tina was not happy.
- Dody left in a hurry after Dody got a phone call but Dody came back five minutes later.
